Sludge Utilization in Degraded and Agricultural Land

Supamard PANICHSAKPATANA บทคัดย่อ             Data from soil taxonomy and the level of organic matter in Thailand demonstrates that about half of total area are at risk of degradation. Some areas are being degraded continuously. Agricultural land is also infertile. Some kind of sludge, which is produced from wastewater treatment plants, is suitable to be used for soil fertility and soil physical properties improvement. Characteristics of sludge such as general chemical properties, plant nutrients and heavy metal content, is important to classify if it may be utilized in degraded and agricultural land. Sludge samples were collected from nine industrial estates and two municipal wastewater treatment plants. They were analyzed for pH, CEC, OM, plant macro and micronutrients and heavy metals. The pH values were nearly neutral or neutral. CEC ranged from 19.19 to 66.58 cmol kg –1. OM made a difference between 0.55 and 3.71 g kg-1. Total N ranged from 0.038 to 0.311 g kg-1. Available P ranged from 2 to 5,043 mg kg–1. The sludge characteristics have been shown that it is very suitable to improve both chemical and physical properties. Although many parameters are good advantage, some samples of sludge contain high concentration of heavy metals and this is the limitation of sludge utilization. Good process design for sludge application is one option of sustainable land management
